U-Boxes are universally designed, portable self-storage containers that are offered by the do-it-yourself moving and self-storage giant, the U-Haul Corporation. U-Boxes are a relatively recent addition to the U-Haul service and product line and have already proven to be leaders in innovative design and efficiency in the self-moving and storage industry.

The U-Haul corporation was started by Sam Shoen and his wife, Mary Carty Shoen, after Sam’s discharge from the U.S. Navy after World War 2. Moving from Los Angeles to Oregon, the Shoens were unable to find a rental trailer for their belongings and were forced to cram what they could into their car and were forced to leave much behind in L.A.

They again relocated to Washington State and faced the same problem of a lack of rental trailers so Sam Shoen began building a line of tow-behind trailers and rented them out through franchised dealers at gas stations. His U-Haul company expanded and soon provided drive-it-yourself enclosed box trucks as well as towing trailers.

In-Depth Look at U-Box

As U-Haul progressed with the self-moving and storage industry, the use of modular storage containers became popular and profitable. While many competitors began offering a wide variety of container designs and sizes, U-Haul developed one size of universal container, calling it the U-Box.

The philosophy of a U-Box is that if you can get something in and out of your house, you need to be able to get it in a U-Box and tow it behind your vehicle. These light-weight, relatively small containers hold about a room and a half of average household goods. Depending on the size of the move, multiple U-Boxes can be used and shipped together on one of the various length U-Haul flat deck rental trailers.

U-Boxes are ideal for household and business moves whether they be local or long-distance. They’re also perfect for temporary storage at one static location for short-term storage during a renovation or longer term, seasonal storage of a wide variety of items that need protecting.

U-Boxes from U-Haul are a revolutionary way to move and/or store valuable items. They provide the convenience of packing, loading, and unloading at the customer’s pace, the flexibility of unlimited time for storage, and the security of storing goods in a U-Haul warehouse.
