Budget Truck Rental is a limited liability company (LLC) owned by Avis Budget Group which is the largest car rental company in the United States. Under the Avis Group, Budget Truck Rental has grown to be the second-largest moving truck rental company in America.
Budget has over 2,800 locations in the continental United States as well as in Canada. It holds a fleet of 32,000 trucks in sizes from 10 feet of enclosed box length to 24 feet with intermediate lengths of 12 feet and 16 feet. The trucks are fueled by a choice of gasoline, propane, or diesel fuel.
In-Depth Look at Budget
Budget has contracts with Ford, GMC, Navistar International, and Isuzu to design and build their expanding fleet of rental moving trucks. Futuristic navigation, tracking, inventory recording, reservation, and ease-of-payment systems are being worked in as new models of moving trucks evolve. Currently, Budget is developing state-of-the-art Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in their trucks in a joint development project with the Garmin navigation company.
Now, nearly all Budget rental trucks have a variety of operator-friendly features such as automatic transmissions, automatic brake locking systems, air conditioning, power brakes and steering, sound systems, power lifts, and safely designed loading ramps.
The moving truck rental branch was spun-off of the already thriving car rental business in 1998 when the Avis Budget group bought Ryder TRS Inc., which was an existing and profitable nationwide moving truck rental company. Jointly, they formed the Budget Truck Group. In 2002, Ryder was fully-integrated into the Budget Group and the distinctive yellow of Ryder was replaced by the new white and blue theme of the Budget brand.
Beyond the rent-a-car and moving truck rental business, Budget has become a national leader in the storage business. Many Budget rental truck franchises are located in the same complexes as Budget self-storage units. The compounding effect of being a full-service provider in the do-it-yourself moving and storage business has allowed Budget to move beyond the core function of supplying enclosed moving trucks to additionally supplying enclosed storage space and a host of value-added services and supplies like packing materials and other moving equipment.
In addition to this move towards better serving do-it-yourself movers, Budget teamed up with Extra Space Storage in 2012 to cross-promote both companies and provide greater convenience to their customers.
